Having little choice, Holroyd accepts and so begins the career of a man who carries misery like a virus, and spreads it liberally. He makes a fortune in the cheap gin trade, bringing untold unhappiness to the London poor of his day, whose miserable lives are only made bearable by the deadly spirit. He becomes a slave trader and at the height of his success transports upwards of one hundred thousand Africans a year to toil on the Indies plantations so that milady might sweeten her morning tea.Thief, rapist, murderer, philosopher and self-confessed moral terrorist. Holroyd, later called George and finally Robert Walker, is such a vassal to the life of pleasure, that he finds it easy to quell his increasing shame. He travels the world- from the warrens of London and Liverpool, through Europe, to the dark continent of Africa, the dangerous colony of New South Wales, and to Hollywood in the 1930’s at the height of its decadence. Along the way he meets many people- the gargantuan Septimus Fowler who he murders so that he can steal his daughter, the ascetic Devil’s Pander Clement Paston, Lady Mary Warton, a beacon of goodness whom he corrupts. The so-called Righteous Man, beggar king of Victorian London and, almost fatally, the deliciously corrupt Lady Jane Saville. For a while, in Victoria’s dull London, he finds happiness when he marries and begins a family. But a man with the Devil on his shoulder knows that such things are, at best, transient, and it is not long before everything he loves is snatched away and he must renew his increasingly more desperate search for answers.is day, whose miserable lives are only made bearable by the deadly spirit. He becomes a slave trader and at the height of his success transports upwards of one hundred thousand Africans a year to toil on the Indies plantations so that milady might sweeten her morning tea.Thief, rapist, murderer, philosopher and self-confessed moral terrorist.
